Archaeologists at the Colony of Avalon have uncovered two fascinating finds that offer a glimpse into daily life in Ferryland more than 400 years ago.
Excavations in the site’s historic buttery revealed a lead trade weight used to measure valuable goods. The area has also produced copper straight pins, lead shot, and animal bones, helping researchers better understand the activities and diet of the colony’s residents.
In another exciting discovery, archaeologists uncovered two hand-crafted slate gaming pieces believed to date to the settlement’s early years. Carefully shaped and polished by hand, these artifacts offer a rare glimpse into recreation and leisure in the 17th century.
