From Hands to Heritage

The Colony of Avalon is currently seeking Newfoundland artisans and craft producers to continue expanding our Gift Shop. If you create high-quality, locally inspired products and are interested in selling your work with us, we would love to hear from you!

We’re proud to spotlight two of our current vendors, both Colony of Avalon alumni staff members who continue to shape and share their craft:

Kerrilynn St. Croix

Originally from Portugal Cove South and now living in Cape Broyle, Kerrilynn has been knitting since she was 15 years old and has worked with the Colony of Avalon for nearly four years. She now leads one of our new Colony of Avalon product lines, knitting beautiful mitts from an original pattern created and generously donated to the Colony of Avalon by Shirley A. Scott. This one-of-a-kind pattern is inspired by our very own heroine, Lady Sara Kirke. Kerrilynn’s work includes beautifully crafted mittens and gloves that blend heritage inspiration with exceptional skill, delivering products that meet the durability standards of the 17th century.

Beth Tucker

From St. Philip’s, Newfoundland, Beth began her journey as a ceramic artist in January 2025. She is currently producing one of the Colony’s most humorous and intriguing pieces, the puzzle jug. This fascinating vessel hides its secrets well, and if you don’t figure out how it works, you may end up with more water on you than in your cup. Her work draws inspiration from texture, experience, and place, and she continues to develop her artistic voice at the Quidi Vidi Village Artisan Studios.

Our brand-new line of Colony of Avalon candles & soaps has officially landed in the gift shop! We’re so proud to partner with Whispering Stone Candle Co. and Mudder’s Soap, to bring you scents that are scent-sationally historic. These incredible artisans have used the 17th century as their inspiration – from roses to juniper, the scents are as clean and fresh as the NL air.

  • Hidden Treasure…

    Loved our visit. Informative museum plus took the wonderful guided tour led by Tish. Learned so much about the colony, Lord Baltimore, and life from then until current archaeology work. Not too far from St. John’s and well worth the one hour trip. Nice Tea Room for lunch too. Nice people all around.

  • They have a wonderful museum at the centre and excellent guided tours.

    I highly recommend taking a guided tour if you’re interested in archeology or life in a 16th - 17th century colony.

    A very friendly staff, a great gift shop, and interesting artifacts. Added bonus of nearby hiking, bird watching and whale watching.

  • A must for history and archaeology buffs

    It is hard to believe Europeans settled in North America over 400 years ago. This tour will give insight and a human side to these settlers, their hardships and their lives. One of our favourite things to see in Newfoundland after more than three weeks on the road. Ask for Isabella who is both knowledgeable and articulate.

  • Brilliant!

    What an amazing place, highly recommend!! We opted to do the guided tour, Evan did a fantastic job showing us around the sites and was lovely to chat with! Lori showed us the recreated kitchen at the end of the tour, she was very kind and answered our many questions :) Can’t wait to visit again some day!

  • Lots of local history!

    A great place to learn about local history. Lots of outdoor exhibits and a small museum with interesting artifacts. And of course, incredible ocean views. There is parking, a cafe and guided tours.
